Sisters Maureen Nelson and Geri Bennett will be opening D'Vine Kailua Wine Bar in the new Lau Hala Shops (where Macy's used to be) in Kailua Town.
The wine bar will offer 32 wine selections on an automated dispensing system, and will also feature a bar with wine tasting and classes. They'll also be offering bites like charcuterie plates and desserts to pair with their seasonally changing wine selections.
Northern California natives, the two sisters grew up watching their mother make her own wines. Having passed away from breast cancer, their hope with this first restaurant concept is to honor their mother's memory, and they are looking for non-profit organizations to partner with to support cancer research and support patients and survivors.
In addition to learning the tricks of the trade from their mother, Geri has two wine certifications from the Wine and Spirits Education Trust, and the Napa Valley Wine Academy. With a number of local craft beer breweries and taprooms popping up in Kailua Town, the sisters saw a need for a space that focused on wine. When Alexander & Baldwin began renovating the shopping area, Maureen saw an opportunity to bring what was just an idea to fruition. “One of our biggest investments is spending time and money making sure it’s a great atmosphere, that the interior is pleasing, and it’s something that’s fun,” Nelson said. “Somewhere that people want to come and hang out." They are also looking for a local artists to paint a mural on the interior walls.
The sisters hope that D'Vine will attract patrons across the spectrum, from connoisseurs to casual sippers. For those who want to learn more, they plan to host educational events led by Gerri, as well as private tastings. D'Vine is planned to open in March of 2019.
